It's not easy to make a call like this,  the fire officials in Winnipeg made the hard choice to put people out for the night. Modern safety equipment including monitored fire extinguishers are good fire protection,  this is one hotel owner who needs to upgrade!

He said city inspectors have been at the hotel on a regular basis over the last year and the situation continued to deteriorate until it wasn't safe for people to be inside.

Extinguished in Ford City!  Sounds like a 1950's western,  but the hero in this case was the school maintanance workers.  They got the fire out before it could spread;  the fire started in the shop from a petro-chemical spray,  it could have been much worse if the fire extinguisher was not ready and charged. Monitoring fire extinguishers is a good idea for schools.

A number of fires at San Jose State in California leave students worrying.  

Fire crews responded to two small fires Thursday morning at Joe West Hall, a high-rise building where about 500 students live.

One was reported in a garbage can on the seventh floor, and the second was reported on the fifth floor. One student suffered cuts to his arm when he broke into a fire extinguisher box.

Vicksburg-Warren School District Superintendent Price estimated the district has spent $25,000 to $30,000 on vandalism-related repairs and cleanup this year. "Those dollars have to come out of the general fund," Price said. No money is set aside for potential vandalism incidents and those costs are not covered by insurance, he said.
